While I was away sick my science class did a science experiment using chicken bones and
various liquids. Today two weeks passed since we soaked the bones so we took them out
and reflected on them. Here is my learning and reflections.
What is bone made of?
Bones are mostly made of collagen but also have calcium keeping our bones strong
Aim To investigate the effect of acid, water and cola on chicken bone.
Method
- Collect 4 chicken bones
- Weigh each bone
- Put bones in individual containers
- Add 1 of various liquids to the container and chicken
- Store for two weeks and reflect on the differences

Changes

Water absorbed
into the bone causing it to become softer. The bacteria that grew while it was in the water for 2 weeks started to create and odour. |
The acid disintegrated
several parts on the bone and absorbed into the bone making it bendier, How ever the acid did not form an odour. |
The bones soaked in Cola
turned black throughout the two weeks. Its texture and smell didn’t change. We plan to re-do the cola experiment as the cola was old and it should have been bendy. |
Conclusion
The bones were not majorly affected after sitting in various liquids for 2 weeks however
small changes in colour, elasticity and smell occured.
Ruby this is a very good account of the experiment. You have made some good observations. Add our photo to show how bendy the chicken bone in acid got.
