This semester in textiles we are focusing on sustainability as a part of our learning we will be researching and making paper out of recycled paper. Over the past two lessons we have researched how paper is made in a factory and how we can make homemade paper.
We have learnt different things that can be added to paper including acrylic paint, flower petals and glitter. Paint and glitter can be added to the water before mixing the newspaper however flowers need to be added after the pulp is in the mesh frame.
Update:
For our past two lessons we have been preparing to make paper by ripping old newspaper and tissue paper into buckets to use for our paper making.
How To: Beautiful Homemade Paper.
One day before our session on Friday Miss Laycock and several students added the ripped paper into buckets to soak. The next day using a blender we blended as much as we could off the paper and water making pulp before adding paint and glitter.
We created a mesh holder to make the paper using two frames with mesh sandwiched between held by rubber bands. Using this we scooped out the pulp into the frame and removed the rubber bands leaving the mesh holding it together. With a sponge we pressed the excess liquid out of the mesh. When they were dry we took them out of the mesh and between newspaper. We ironed until the paper was completely stable, flat and dry.
Over two sessions using card and other accessories we made 4 cards. We were unable to make the cards completely out of the paper due to a lockdown.
