In science at the moment we are learning about acids and bases. Over the past two weeks we have been doing different experiments including testing the Ph of household chemicals & making salts by acid reactions. We have learnt the difference between an acid and the base, how to identify the Ph level & how they react.
On the Ph scale the colours range from a red/orange, through green to blue to a violet, (ROYGBIV). Acids have a Ph less than 7 & bases have a Ph more than 7. The lower the Ph the more acidic a solution is whereas the higher the Ph the more basic the solution is. Solutions that are basic/neutral (in the middle) have a Ph of 7.
Our task today was to observe and create the affect of acid rain, Using different natural items, & bases we made an acid rain using a reaction.
Equipment: Petri dish, weigh boat, universal indicator, bromothynol blue, blue litmus, apple, petal, sodium sulfate, sulfuric acid and calcium carbonate.
Method: - Place a weigh boat in the middle of a petri dish
- Around the outside of the weigh boat within the dish place a drop or small amount of the 6 substances not allowing them to touch
- In the weigh boat put a spatula full of sodium sulfate
- In the weigh boat put a few drops of sulfuric acid and quickly close the lid and keep closed
- Finally keep the dish closed and wait for the reaction to happen and see results
Observations:
Before we added the sodium sulfate & sulfuric acid we took notes on what each of the substances looked and felt like, We did this so we can document the changes we see due to the reaction.
After the acid rain we found most things had changed in some kind of way, whether it be texture, colour or density.
-The universal indicator first started as a light green liquid, after the acid rain it turned red. Therefore we know that universal indicator is an acid.
- The bromothymol blue began as a dark blue liquid, after the acid rain it became a deep yellow liquid, this means bromothynol blue is an acid.
- The calcium carbonate started as a fine white/beige powder and changed into a chalky beige powder
- The blue litmus started as a light blue it then became a pink/red colour making it an acid
- The apple started as a standard apple, it then lost its moisture & went dry and its skin lost its colour pigmentation.
Overall this was an interesting experiment and I learnt a lot. I liked watching all the colours change and observing all the reactions. If we were to do this again I would probably put less substances in one tray to avoid them mixing as we experienced.
