Whats Happening
- reaping scene, two tributes selected to compete in the Hunger Games.
Describe Costumes
- light coloured, neutral tones, classic/simple, formal/sunday best
boys: dress shirts, pants/shorts
girls: dresses/skirts, hair tidy/out of face
colours - cold, clean, faded/worn/washed, older clothes/been mended
Effect On Viewers
- think they are poor because clothes are outdated
- peacekeepers & effy in bright clean new outifts
- think it is a bad living, emotionless, all the colour has been drained
Director Purpose
- show the comparison/juxtaposition between the colours, clothing and living style compared to the bright, new & modern capitol
- shows theme "rich vs poor" because district 12 doesn't have access to resources like new clothing
Other Techniques
- makeup, style = status, effy's eyelashes are lengthy & pink and her face is painted white as a sign of wealth & not having to work.
- the district has no makeup on, very natural, they don't have access or priority for it
The Capitol/Tributes Getting Off Train
Whats Happening
- In the capitol Katniss & Peeta just getting off the train, first time in the capitol
Describe Costumes
- bright, colourful, neon, extravagant, vibrant, oversized
- looks expensive & more fancy then casual
- over the top - excessive, more than needed to be practical
- matching headpieces to outfits, extreme wigs
- not gender bias, both genders are equally over the top, trying to look the richest, outfits/makeups/make up
Effect On Viewers
- think they are very rich, look wealthy, greedy
- fashion is shocking & in your face
- show us how shocked katniss & peeta were seeing it for the first time, super different from their normal lives
Director Purpose
- again shows us theme "rich vs poor", the people in the capitol live in extreme, luxury compared to the poverty of district 12
- people in the capitol have everything
Other Techniques
- makeup, over the top, caked on so we know they have lots, both men & woman are wearing it
- very modern and clean, concrete, glass, clean, crisp, futuristic, technologically advanced,
Hunger Games Arena
Whats Happening
- in the arena of the hunger games
Describe Costumes
- practical, suitable for fighting, jackets, boots, shirts, long pants
- colours that will match surroundings & help hide/camouflage
- tells us about the climate of the arena
- not going as far/ changing climates
Effect On Viewer
- feels like they are dressed for war/hunting, all the same/uniform
- looks like everyone has the same advantage, starting off the same
- makes us less emotionally attached to specific individuals
Director Purpose
- rich vs poor, everyone is finally equally advantaged regardless of district, personal skills are more important rather than wealth & status
- struggle for power, tributes are under the power of the capitol, they have no freedom/freewill at this point in time
